About

Our Cardinal Points

JESUS

Jesus, our true North.  Jesus Christ is the starting point of navigating our lives.  We learn who we are through our identity in Christ.  We will explore this through our chapel times and exploring God’s creation.

HOLISTIC

The Compass Classroom strives to meet the needs of the whole child.  Our view of the child captures the child as capable, creative, inquisitive, and having agency in their learning.  We aim to meet the needs of the mind through open-ended play, opportunities to explore their own interests, and to create and learn from nature.

The Compass Classroom will focus on nutrition, fine and gross motor skills, and mindfulness to meet the needs of the body.  Our plan is to make a variety of breads on Monday to use during our snacks for the week.  We will add fruits/vegetable and other healthy options as well.  We will practice mindfulness by learning the life skills of being careful, helpful, respectful, responsible, and patient.  This will also help in learning to manage our big emotions.

We are designed to be in community. We will meet the needs of spirit in the Compass Classroom by becoming a community of learners that values everyone’s thoughts and ideas. Having a voice increases motivation and learning.

PLAY

Play is the child’s work. -Fred Rogers

If it isn’t in the hand and body, it is not in the brain.

-Bev Bos

Research shows that play is learning.  The Compass Classroom invites children to explore, discover, create, and learn through play in a social setting.  A rich and interesting environment will be our third teacher as we use our imagination to explore our interests.  Story workshop will be another opportunity to learn and play.

EXPLORATION

The Compass Classroom embodies the pedagogical approach of social constructivism. This includes elements of the Reggio Emilia approach, emergent curriculum, and nature-based learning.  Our learning is constructed socially through exploration of our interests, interacting with our environment, and nature.  Literacy, math, science, art are woven into our explorations organically.
